Tulum, or formerly called Zamá, was a walled city of the Mayan culture located in the State of Quintana Roo, in the southeast of Mexico, on the coast of the Caribbean Sea.
Tulum is a city on the Caribbean coast of Mexico, on the Yucatán Peninsula. It is known for its well-preserved ruins of an ancient Mayan port. The main building is a large stone structure called El Castillo, which stands at the top of a rocky cliff, above the white sand beaches and turquoise sea. Near the ruins is the Tulum National Park, a coastal area with mangroves and cenotes.
Coba is a very large and dispersed archaeological area and exploring it completely is a complicated task.
Coba is the archaeological zone with the highest temple in the Yucatan Peninsula and has the oldest network of stone roads in the Mayan world.
It also contains stone steles with inscriptions about important events in this ancient city.
It is believed that the name “Coba” is the original name of this city, which means “chopped water”, due to the proximity to lagoons.
