For the Mayan culture, the Tzunum is the Hummingbird.
An ancient Mayan legend relates the origin of the Tzunum. It tells how the gods, after creating animals, plants and human beings, realized that they needed to create a being that could carry human thoughts from one place to another. They took a fine Jade stone in their hands, carved it into a sharp arrow, blew on it, and a beautiful hummingbird flew out.
In the pre-Columbian cultures of Mesoamerica, the figure of the hummingbird was a symbol that carried an encrypted message from the cosmos. He was associated with the Sun on Earth. It is said to be the messenger of souls…

This bird was in charge of carrying out the order of the gods to transmit good thoughts among men.
The T’zunum carries from here to there the thoughts of men and not only of the living, but also of the souls of our loved ones from the afterlife, since it is the only being, according to the Mayans, that never died and could in and out of the underworld.
